Mining and Indigenous Peoples’ consent

Multinational mining companies place increasing emphasis on community engagement as part of their corporate responsibility. However, they engage with communities in an inconsistent manner and rarely comply with the standards necessary for respect for Indigenous Peoples’ rights, interests and well-being.

Indigenous Peoples consider that Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), as embodied in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of 2007, is the minimum standard that mining companies should work to.

ECCR and several project partners are planning a new project entitled Making FPIC a Reality for Indigenous Communities, 2010-13: Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and Mining. For more information please contact Miles Litvinoff.
