Ask your pension provider to challenge BP and Shell about tar sands
Canada's tar sands (oil sands) are a major threat to efforts to tackle climate change. They make up the world's second largest body of oil reserves, and their production involves greenhouse gas emissions three times higher than for conventional oil.
Tar sands developments have human rights costs in addition to those associated with dangerous climate change. The pollution, deforestation and wildlife disturbance they cause threaten the traditional livelihoods and wellbeing of indigenous communities.
This spring, pension providers will use shareholdings in BP and Shell to vote for or against AGM resolutions supported by ECCR, our corporate member
and many faith-based and responsible investors. You can use the power of your pension or savings to help force a review of tar sands developments.
What you can do:
- Read the shareholder resolutions and supporting statements.
- Find out more about tar sands.
- Email your pension provider using the FairPensions web facility to express your concerns.
- Email one of BP and Shell's largest shareholders.
- Tell us you have taken action.
