Call on Shell to implement the recommendations in ECCR's report, Shell in the Niger Delta

Impacts of oil extraction have been severe for Niger Delta communities and the natural environment on which they depend. While Western society remains highly oil-dependent, virtually all of us benefit from the oil extracted by Shell in Nigeria.

Besides being oil consumers, those of us who own shares in Shell individually, institutionally or through managed funds - or whose pension fund, bank or insurance company holds such investments - have moral responsibility for what is done in our name by Shell in the Niger Delta.

ECCR's report Shell in the Niger Delta: A Framework for Change focuses on the corporate duty to respect human rights. It offers 10 recommendations to Royal Dutch Shell Plc and the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) to address the problems identified.

What you can do:

  • Read the executive summary (pdf) or full report (pdf).
  • Use our action guide (pdf) to raise concerns directly with Shell and/or with your pension fund, fund manager, bank or insurance company - almost all of whom will have invested in Shell or considered doing so.
  • Send us a copy of your letters/emails and any replies you receive by email to Miles Litvinoff or by post to ECCR's office.
